Importance of the Yama Deepam
According to mythology, Hima was the 16-year-old son of a king. According to his horoscope, he was fated to die of a snake bite four nights after his wedding. And upon learning of the prophecy, his spouse devised a plan to mislead Lord Yama by placing lamps outside her home's main entrance and decorating it with gold coins and jewellery. Lord Yama, disguised as a snake, was mesmerised by the gleaming jewellery and glimmering lights when he came. To further undermine Lord Yama's objective, the young bride kept her husband from falling asleep by telling him stories. Thus, she was able to prevent Lord Yama from entering the house by distracting him with the beauty of the lamps. And by doing so, she altered the course of her husband's life.
Therefore, on this day, worshippers light lamps Yama Deepam at their home's main door to fend off any danger to their family members' lives. Thus, they render homage to Lord Yama.
